Commissioner of Police (Delhi) |
Delhi
has about 65 lakhs vehicles registered in the city.
The city also has one of the largest network of
roads to carry vehicles from not only the city but
all over the country within its jurisdiction. I am
aware of the problems which a citizen comes across
while using vehicle on the roads of Delhi.
Delhi Traffic Police has made
serious efforts to maintain the smooth flow of
traffic on the roads of city. Delhi faces the
issues of parking, mobility and congestion on
roads.
After taking over as the
Commissioner of Police, Delhi improving the traffic
scenario is one of my most important priority. We
have selected 10 corridors in which we are going to
ensure that traffic flows according to rules. We
will ensure that buses and other heavy vehicles ply
on the left lane of the carriageway. Buses line-up
in a single file on bus stand as has been laid down
by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. For this we
have put traffic staff at bus stands to ensure
smooth flow of traffic in these corridors. As per
rules, slow moving vehicles including TSRs must move
in the central lane of the carriageway. These slow
moving vehicles should neither come on the extreme
right lane and upset the fast moving traffic nor on
the left lane which are usually to be taken by buses
and heavy vehicles. Extreme right lane should be
kept free for fast moving traffic. These measures
will ensure speedy discharge of vehicles even at
peak hours. The Traffic Police has put motorcycles
on these selected corridors to check any violation
by any vehicle. There will be continuous presence
of Traffic police on the intersections in these
corridors. The selected corridors include Ring Road
from Naraina to Ashram, Outer Circle Connaught
Place, Tilak Marg – Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg upto
Delhi Gate, Sardar Patel Marg, Lodhi Road, Prithvi
Raj Road, Aurbindo Marg from Safdarjung Tomb to IIT
Crossing, Bhishma Pitamah Marg and August Kranti
Marg from Lodhi Road to Outer Ring Road, Nelson
Mandela Marg and Mathura Road from Neela Gumbad to
Apollo Hospital. Seeing the success of these
corridors management we are increasing these
corridors to 15 to include Outer Ring Road from Modi
Mill flyover to Rao Tula Ram Marg, Vinay Marg –
Africa Avenue. Teen Murti Marg round about to
C-Hexagon through Akbar Road, Vikas Marg and
National Highway 24 from Nizamuddin bridge to
Ghazipur.
We will ensure smooth traffic on the roads of the
city so that citizens are facilitated to the
maximum. I am aware of the contribution of Delhi
Traffic Police in the recently held Commonwealth
Games – 2010. I will ensure that the excellent work
done by Delhi Traffic Police will continue in times
to come with a redoubles vigor.
B. K. Gupta, IPS
Commissioner of Police, Delhi.
